Corey Wootton

Corey Wootton

DE, Northwestern
6-6, 270, 4.8-40
Projection: 4th round

Wooton has the size, strength and athleticism to play the 5-technique DE position in the 3-4. He is tough, physical and aggressive and consistently plays with a high motor.

He has had durability issues, which will drop his position in the draft from a sure-fire 2nd rounder to more of a 3rd or 4th round prospect. Some teams will be scared off by the torn ACL he suffered in the Alamo Bowl after the 2008 season. Wootton played sparingly in 2009 so NFL teams will have to evaluate his play based more on 2008 film. Assuming he checks out medically, he could be a steal for the Jets if he was still on the board in the 4th round. Before the injury he was difficult to block. He is very athletic for a guy his size and gets off the ball quickly. He stacks well vs. the double team and shows great instincts diagnosing plays. There are two aspects of his play that project him well to the NFL – he improved every year at Northwestern (before the injury) and he made a ton of plays behind the line of scrimmage. Both factors generally translate to success at the next level. He is also very versatile. He can line up at 3-4 DE and move inside to 4-3 tackle on passing downs. He uses his hands well to shed blocks in the running game and shows impressive strength and power as a bull rusher in the passing game. Even though he is not considered an elite edge rusher, he has a variety of moves (club, swim and rip) that enable him to get to the QB. He can also play special teams – he blocked a few field goals while at Northwestern.
