Jets-Panthers Extra Points

Ferguson did a nice job on Peppers.

Good teams know how to finish drives late in games and the Jets took a step in that direction against the Panthers.

Clinging to an 8-point lead with 7 minutes to go, the Jets drove 31 yards from their own 39 and kicked a field goal that extended their lead to 11 with four minutes left. The offense ate up 4 minutes using five running plays to eat up the clock.

Their lone pass play was a well-designed 16-yarder by Brian Schottenheimer. He brought Danny Woodhead in motion out of the backfield and got him singled up on a linebacker who had to fight through traffic to get to the perimeter.

Solid job by D’Brickashaw Ferguson who kept stud defensive end Julius Peppers at bay most of the day. Peppers finished with 3 solo tackles, ½ a sack and 1 tackle for loss - not bad stats for most players but sub-par for a player of Pepper’s ability.

You know an offensive lineman is doing a good job when you do not hear his name called often and Ferguson has stayed out of the spotlight most of the season.

Stopping Peppers was a key in this game and D’Brickashaw kept him under wraps, particularly on passing downs.

As noted by SNY’s analysts, Ray Lucas and Adam Schein, Braylon Edwards must start doing a better job tucking the ball away. When he gets into the open field, he likes to palm the ball with one hand as if he was a basketball player going in for a dunk.

That may work in hoops but it is going to get him in trouble in the NFL. He fumbled the ball after he broke off a big play against Jacksonville and will most definitely do it again if he does not cover it up.

It is surprising that receivers coach Henry Ellard has not addressed this yet with Edwards. If Edwards fumbles it again it will become Rex Ryan’s responsibility to fix.

Other Random Thoughts

The Jets’ defense had an inauspicious start to this game. After holding Carolina on first and second down, it surrendered three consecutive 3rd down conversions. All were 3rd and longs (13, 10 & 7 yards) and the first two were accomplished by running plays…Sanchez’ interception came on his first attempt after sitting out a few plays with a banged up knee…The Jets’ defense held DeAngelo Williams to 2.5 yards per carry, less than half his season average (5.2)…The Jets had more confusion with player substitutions when Kellen Clemens was late for an extra point attempt…The Jets were 5-13 on third down. Their season average is 35.8%, which ranks them 24th in the league…MLB Jon Beason was tough to block all day and led all defenders with 17 tackles.
