Favre will bring infectious energy to the team

I have a suggestion for Fireman Ed: start rehearsing your new B-R-E-T-T! Brett! Brett! Brett! cheer because there are going to be a lot of opportunities to cheer for the Jet’s new QB.

It took me a week but I am finally starting to see the logic in this trade.  What we fans rarely get a sense of, and this is especially true during Mangini’s tenure, is how players are progressing in practice.

Brett Favre

Favre is still a solid talent but is more trouble than he is worth

Reports of the Jet’s interest in Brett Favre has to have Jets fans excited.  There is nothing to argue about when it comes to his talent.  Favre would be the Jets best option if the team decides to trade for him.  But is this decision really that simple?

We all know he would not be around for very long, maybe two years at most.  Would he be worth the investment?

Clemens' scrambling ability will give him an edge over Chad

With training camp one day away, now is the time to start breaking down position battles that will unfold over the next six weeks.  The QB competition has been dissected and analyzed throughout the entire offseason and it’s anyone’s guess who will win it.

Richardson's blocking will immediately improve the Jet's rushing attack

The Jet’s signing of fullback Tony Richardson is further proof of the team’s intent to play a smash-mouth style of football this coming season.  Along with higher profile signings of Alan Faneca and Damien Woody, the Jets brought in Richardson to pound the ball early and often.

Richardson will be employed as the lead blocker in traditional two-back sets to clear the way for Thomas Jones who will rebound from a sub-par 2007.  Jones still has plenty left in the tank and Richardson will make him look good just as he has for other backs throughout his career.

Free Agent

Woody comes to New York with a lot of baggage

The Jet’s signing of Damien Woody in free agency was a surprising move.  Woody, a former first round pick of the Patriots, has seen his career derailed by injuries, lackluster effort and poor conditioning.  He will have to prove the Jets were smart to bring him in into the fold despite a poor 2007 season during which he lost his starting job.

Were it not for his solid play at his new right tackle position, Woody was closer to retirement than he was cashing in on a big, free-agent payday.  The fact that Eric Mangini and he worked together in New England helped his cause immensely but Woody will have to work much harder than he did in Detroit if he wants to stick around.
